| Bio | b., lives and works in New York Valincy-Jean Patelli is a self taught Black Nonbinary artist working and living in Brooklyn, New York. Patelli experiments with three dimensional textures to create mixed-media works and sculptures. This nonlinear process allows them to blend stories from their ancestors with historical, theoretical and Yoruba cultural references that stem from the African diaspora. Valincy is interested in examining the disenfranchisement and marginalization of Queer and Black American culture.Creating multi-layers of texture by transforming various common materials into what they call artifacts and heirlooms. Using plaster, wood, burlap, canvas and other non-traditional materials their intention is to invoke radical and provocative stories that challenge this intersectional narrative. Patelli’s work has been exhibited in numerous group shows and belongs to collections in North America and Europe. Residencies include Patio Taller Residency in Puerto Rico, 2014 and a self directed residency in Berlin, Germany 2015-2017. The Sheen Center, NYC invited Patelli to participate in Little Rock 9: 1957, a group show in 2018. Currently, their work is part of the UNRPED group show in Los Angeles 2020-2022. -=≡=- Valincy-Jean Patelli é artistes não bináries negres autodidatas que trabalha e vive no Brooklyn, Nova York. Patelli experimenta texturas tridimensionais para criar obras e esculturas de mídia mista. Esse processo não linear permite que eles misturem histórias de seus ancestrais com referências históricas, teóricas e culturais iorubás que derivam da diáspora africana. Valincy está interessade em examinar a privação de direitos e marginalização da cultura queer e negra americana. Criando várias camadas de textura transformando vários materiais comuns no que eles chamam de artefatos e heranças. Usando gesso, madeira, serapilheira, tela e outros materiais não tradicionais, sua intenção é invocar histórias radicais e provocativas que desafiam essa narrativa interseccional. O trabalho de Patelli foi exibido em inúmeras exposições coletivas e pertence a coleções na América do Norte e na Europa. As residências incluem Patio Taller Residency em Porto Rico, 2014 e uma residência autodirigida em Berlim, Alemanha 2015-2017. O Sheen Center, NYC convidou Patelli para participar de Little Rock 9: 1957, uma exposição coletiva em 2018. | Statement | My point of departure begins with my materials. Inspired by the works of artists like Mark Bradford and Phyllida Barlow, I gravitate towards non-traditional mediums and formats, often using found or household objects and finding inspiration from urban environmental debris. I experiment with mixed media abstractions and three-dimensional textures that discuss my ancestors’ historical, theoretical, and cosmology of Yoruba cultural references from the African diaspora. This nonlinear process allows me to explore the marginalization of Queer and Black American culture through environmental and pop culture references by transforming various common materials into Artifacts and Heirlooms. Using plaster, wood, burlap, pistachio shells, paper punch holes, sand, and gold, my works range from 3-inch sculptures to multi-layered 9-foot wall hanging installations. -=≡=- Meu ponto de partida começa com meus materiais. Inspirades nas obras de artistas como Mark Bradford e Phyllida Barlow, gravito em torno de mídias e formatos não tradicionais, muitas vezes usando objetos encontrados ou domésticos e encontrando inspiração em detritos ambientais urbanos. Eu experimento com abstrações de mídia mista e texturas tridimensionais que discutem referências históricas, teóricas e cosmológicas de meus ancestrais das referências culturais iorubás da diáspora africana. Esse processo não linear me permite explorar a marginalização da cultura queer e negra americana por meio de referências ambientais e da cultura pop, transformando vários materiais comuns em artefatos e heranças. Usando gesso, madeira, serapilheira, cascas de pistache, furos de papel, areia e ouro, meus trabalhos variam de esculturas de 3 polegadas a instalações de parede com várias camadas de 9 pés.
