Bio

Magdalyn Segale works in movement, poetry, and interdisciplinary arts with a focus on the body’s experience of life – its griefs, its joys, its revelations. She has performed extensively in NYC since 2010, and in museums and galleries in the US, Europe and Southeast Asia since 2015. She has taught intermittently at the Putney School since 2017 thanks to Director of Dance, Jessica Batten and is currently on faculty as dance teacher at Irvington High School in New Jersey.

Since 2015, she is a principal collaborator with artist Cally Spooner on projects: On False Tears and Outsourcing, OFFSHORE, and DEADTIME, and her most recent film work entitled Maggie’s Solo, which is on exhibition at GBAgency in Paris, The Walker Arts Centre in Minneapolis, and at Musuem Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium.

Magdalyn trained in dance at The Juilliard School (BFA 2014), and in poetry with Diana Arterian and Alicia Mountain (2020, 2021).

Statement

Statement

I’d like my art to function as a sort of pathway of sensory meditations that would lead anyone-who-wishes to a gorgeous, poetic embodiment, if only for a glimmering moment. I seek connections with embodied poets across history and the future. I come from dance, and I work in poetry and philosophy, always with collaborators, always with nature. Though I have tried periodically to escape the tethers of dance in my body and heart, the history is inextricable from my fibers. Dance is the beginning, middle, and end of how I explore grief, decay, and love.
