Bio

Janey Roanna (23) is an interdisciplinary Graphic Designer and Photographer whose work focuses on communication & (cultural) Diversity. She’s a Caribbean/Dutch woman raised in the suburbs of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

“I move through cities with my camera like a poet with a pen—seeking, sensing, capturing. My work is a conversation between movement and stillness, between the seen and the unseen. I document people and places not as they are expected to be, but as they exist in their rawest, most unfiltered form.

My practice is rooted in storytelling—of identity, displacement, and connection. As a Black woman raised in the Netherlands, my lens is drawn to the rhythms of diaspora, to the ways history lingers in architecture, in gestures, in the silence between words. I chase the energy of the streets, the fleeting exchanges, the quiet rebellions.

Photography is my way of holding onto the ephemeral, of giving permanence to moments that might otherwise slip away. Whether through analog film or digital experiments, I push the boundaries of my medium, always seeking new ways to translate feeling into image. My work is not just about what we see—it’s about what we feel & what we remember.”

Statement

Statement

Through photography, design, and mixed media, I explore themes of identity, human connection, and the shifting nature of urban life. My work is both personal and collective, drawn from lived experience but resonating with broader cultural narratives.

Raised in the Netherlands, my perspective is shaped by movement—between places, between cultures, between belonging and questioning. I am drawn to the unspoken, to the quiet tensions that exist in the everyday. Whether through analog photography or bold graphic compositions, I seek to highlight what is often overlooked, to give form to emotions that resist definition.

At its core, my practice is about storytelling—not through words, but through image, texture, and space. I create work that invites reflection, sparks dialogue, and lingers beyond the moment of encounter.
