Statement
Statement | My work focuses on examining our reality from a critical perspective. My artistic investigations revolve around personal and collective memories of gender-based violence and national identity, to question and subvert the political construction of memory and the aesthetic condition of individuals. My projects interweave intimate memories with collective experiences, using the intimate as a political starting point. My work stems from my identity as an Ecuadorian woman within a global, patriarchal, and neoliberal context. Through various artistic languages, I aim to critically confront power structures that perpetuate social issues such as violence and discrimination. In my recent processes, I utilize symbols and objects containing memory and national identity to question and reconsider identity concepts. I also reflect on the male aesthetic regime that imposes ideals and norms on how to be and represent the human being in society. Through the appropriation of cultural products derived from patriarchal and neoliberal systems, I employ media like video, performance, and installation to explore the naturalization of these structures.
The series of projects and ideas I have developed in recent years, although they may sometimes appear disconnected, are always marked by the need to challenge the established reality and create fictional worlds that allow confronting reality. |
