Art Statement

Nirvana SQ’s work explores theoretical concepts through abstract photography, mainly Philosophical and Scientific notions, seeking to show in the form of a visual metaphor, a shape for ideas from contemporary thought. Through visual abstraction, along with punctual text pieces, her photography creates perceptual bridges towards theoretical abstractions, exploring in this manner constantly the ability of imagination –that of our minds creating images from the vast and diverse array of perceptions and relations that the mind is constantly bringing in and organizing.

The photographic subjects used to do this are as varied as needed, yet stitched together by the conceptual theme at hand. The technique is digital photography with only light and color manipulation, no layers, additions or collage, as the point is that the photographs must be found; the mind must recognize the appearance of an abstract concept when it “sees” it, in its de-contextuality, as it is in the quotidian and serendipitous surroundings that the image is found. From there, then proceed to emphasize its abstract and theoretical qualities. Nirvana SQ’s photography draws a great deal from her academic work in the philosophy of sciences, mainly on the ideas of P.K. Feyerabend on theory laden observation, Ian Hacking’s views on Representation, and an issue at heart of L. Wittgenstein’s Philosophy: “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent” + there are things we cannot speak of, so we must show them.

La obra de Nirvana SQ explora conceptos teóricos a través de la fotografía abstracta, principalmente nociones filosóficas y científicas, buscando representar en forma de metáfora visual una estructura para las ideas del pensamiento contemporáneo. Mediante la abstracción visual, junto con fragmentos de texto puntuales, su fotografía crea puentes perceptuales hacia abstracciones teóricas, explorando de manera constante la capacidad de la imaginación: aquella de nuestras mentes que crean imágenes a partir del vasto y diverso conjunto de percepciones y relaciones que la mente constantemente recopila y organiza.

Los temas fotográficos utilizados para lograr esto son tan variados como sea necesario, pero se entrelazan por el tema conceptual en cuestión. La técnica empleada es la fotografía digital con manipulación exclusiva de luz y color, sin capas, adiciones ni collage, ya que el punto es que las fotografías deben descubrirse; la mente debe reconocer la aparición de un concepto abstracto cuando “lo ve”, en su falta de contexto, tal como se encuentra en los entornos cotidianos y casuales donde se descubre la imagen. A partir de ahí, se procede a enfatizar sus cualidades abstractas y teóricas. La fotografía de Nirvana SQ se nutre en gran medida de su trabajo académico en filosofía de las ciencias, principalmente en las ideas de P.K. Feyerabend sobre la observación cargada de teoría, las perspectivas de Ian Hacking sobre la Representación y una cuestión central en la Filosofía de L. Wittgenstein: Aquello de lo que no podemos hablar, debemos mostrar.
