Statement | My practice combines my formal training as an architect with glassworking and an intuitive utilizations of construction materials to create sculptures, installations, and performances that reflect on experiences of trauma and dislocation as an immigrant artist born in Turkey and working in Western countries. My works are informed, in part, by a devastating earthquake I survived as a child and engage with the inherent fragility of architectural realizations in the face of uncontrollable natural forces as well as the cyclical nature of destruction and construction played out upon the urban landscape. I seek to facilitate reconciliation throughout my practice by blurring borders between the body and my material mediums, creating works that provide a psychological space that allows for understanding and acceptance in the face of physical vulnerability and fear of the unknown. |
