Statement

Statement

As an interdisciplinary artist, I aim to challenge art’s traditional boundaries and expectations by directly engaging with diverse mediums. I combine ancestral techniques like printmaking, painting, and fiber art with contemporary expressions such as assemblage, video art, and performance. My inspiration comes from researching my pre-hispanic ancestors and exploring modern tools like the iPad and augmented reality.

Through my artistic practice, I create a dynamic dialogue that intertwines the past and present. I venture into blending performance on video with indigenous makeup, projecting poems onto fibers through video, employing digital art in linoleum printmaking followed by laser cuts and assemblages, and crafting murals inspired by augmented reality, all in the pursuit of inventing new meanings and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Throughout my creative journey, I’ve discovered that my multifaceted identity only sometimes fits neatly within societal norms. Nevertheless, within my art, I provide a space where marginalized social groups can overcome misconceptions and confront painful histories, giving voice to those who have been marginalized and overlooked.

My work’s visual textures and repetitions reject the notion of perfection, as I embrace my natural impulses as an act of rebellion against societal norms. Like facing fears, the repetition of visual themes and figures symbolizes my path of overcoming challenges and embracing my identity. In essence, my art represents a spiritual and romantic exploration that transcends the stereotypes associated with my identity as a gay man, husband, immigrant, and Latino. By fusing ancient and modern techniques, I continue to generate a new narrative that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and personal growth.
