Statement
Statement | I am the daughter of an immigrant, and I am an immigrant myself, having moved between Venezuela, Germany, and finally, the United States. When studied intimately, my work is a conversation about being uprooted, an experience that has marked my life since childhood.  Nonetheless, it would be a lie if I said that I start any given project with such a clear conceptual framework. In my creative process, I always begin by exploring the formal suggestions of the materials I work with: clay, wood, and metal. I let these materials express themselves and let them say what they have to say. However, over the years, I’ve come to realize that the final result — once the piece has been fired and fully processed — reveals a rupture, a longing for unity that can be seen across my work.  In other words, it is only later, when I see the final result, that I realize that my sculptures have given a visual form to the experience of exile.
